Romantic and Victorian Poetry pt.1

1. Two Historical Events during the Romantic Period

  • A major event that happened during this era was the Boston Massacre. On March 5, 1770 there was a huge number of British troops in the city of Boston as the time which most people didn't really like. It started off as two people arguing with on soldier and from there came a crowd. The argument escalated into a brawl which led to the British soldier's discharging their muskets and killed three on the spot and two died later.

  • Another major event was trying to make men and women equal which was being attempted my Judith Sargent Murray. She was a playwright, essayist and a poet, and the first have the idea of men and women being able to achieve the same things in life such as education. Judith also help found a female academy in Massachusetts in the year of 1802.

2.What was life like during this time?

  • During the Romantic period it seemed as if their was just a tiny bit of freedom especially for the women of that era. Just by the name of that era it seemed like there was lots of love in the air as far as writing goes. But their were also plenty of historical mile stones taken in this era, such as the Declaration of Independence or the Revolutionary war, which were both done to make the country better for the people. I believe people did think for themselves enough to create different pieces of work for different minds.

3. What did the Romantic poets want to express in their work?

  1. One quality of Romanticism poetry was imagination. In romantic period the imagination was used to make the most nonhuman object appear to have life. If something is described with more of your imagination the you give it more of a loving quality to me. If they were talking about anything you could be sure it would be more than what it actually is.

  2. Nature was also a part of the romantics poetry. The nature aspect of this period of time was basically the feeling of being free and natural. They had more of an imagination with the poetry giving nature more life than ever before, making words for objects that will never speak a word. In this period your mind was able to roam to where ever it pleased.
  3. Emotion are another major quality of Romanticism poetry. Emotion is what was poured into all the writings from the romantics. In order for them to write what they did you would need to feel a certain way about what you are writing. Their emotion varied from happiness to their optimistic side.
