Romantic and Victorian Poetry pt.1

1. Two Historical Events during the Romantic Period

  • A major event that happened during this era was the Boston Massacre. On March 5, 1770 there was a huge number of British troops in the city of Boston as the time which most people didn't really like. It started off as two people arguing with on soldier and from there came a crowd. The argument escalated into a brawl which led to the British soldier's discharging their muskets and killed three on the spot and two died later.

  • Another major event was trying to make men and women equal which was being attempted my Judith Sargent Murray. She was a playwright, essayist and a poet, and the first have the idea of men and women being able to achieve the same things in life such as education. Judith also help found a female academy in Massachusetts in the year of 1802.

2.What was life like during this time?

  • During the Romantic period it seemed as if their was just a tiny bit of freedom especially for the women of that era. Just by the name of that era it seemed like there was lots of love in the air as far as writing goes. But their were also plenty of historical mile stones taken in this era, such as the Declaration of Independence or the Revolutionary war, which were both done to make the country better for the people. I believe people did think for themselves enough to create different pieces of work for different minds.

3. What did the Romantic poets want to express in their work?

  1. One quality of Romanticism poetry was imagination. In romantic period the imagination was used to make the most nonhuman object appear to have life. If something is described with more of your imagination the you give it more of a loving quality to me. If they were talking about anything you could be sure it would be more than what it actually is.

  2. Nature was also a part of the romantics poetry. The nature aspect of this period of time was basically the feeling of being free and natural. They had more of an imagination with the poetry giving nature more life than ever before, making words for objects that will never speak a word. In this period your mind was able to roam to where ever it pleased.
  3. Emotion are another major quality of Romanticism poetry. Emotion is what was poured into all the writings from the romantics. In order for them to write what they did you would need to feel a certain way about what you are writing. Their emotion varied from happiness to their optimistic side.

The Restoration pt. 2

2. Satire-human or individual vices, follies, abuses, or shortcomings are held up to censure by means of ridicule, derision, burlesque, irony, or other methods, ideally with the intent to bring about improvement.

My Definition- a satire to me is when one or many flaws of a person are brought out in a funny way on a show or movie or any type of entertainment. Examples of this would be: Saturday Night Live, Scary Movie, Not another Teen Movie, or The Boondocks.

3. A Modest Proposal

While reading this it seemed like he was being very sarcastic to me on serious subjects. When he talked about the children being eaten and the families not being able to keep their children was just an example of something he's trying to make people pay close attention to now since they have read this. He is talking mostly of the poorness of his country and how people are starving along with their children, these are issues of his time which have never been talked of in this particular way. The matters in his story are true but made fun of, which constitutes as a satire to me.

4. A Journal of The Plague Year

In Defoe's Journal it seems like he's telling various story's of people who have illnesses or what he has encountered in the profession of being an examiner. During this time the plague was affecting everyone and was very contagious. In one story he told he was saying a man was ill and ended up running out the door, swam up and down the river, and back to bed and he was cured, which is very unbelievable to me. In this journal I feel as if some things were exaggerated to a certain extent to show maybe the seriousness of it or the humor in it. Defoe just shed light on the things happening in his world at that time whether it may be the full story or just half of it.

5. What do you think was most important to people living in this time?

In this world the most important things to people now is their health. I've noticed at a lot of restaurants (fast food included) that many foods have been made to have 0 grams trans fat or have 100 calories or as little calories as possible. More people want to see the dietary menu to show whats in it or how fattening it actually is. Years ago people wouldn't care what their bodies digested and what affect it would have later on their bodies.
In this day in time we are practicing a more healthier life style, and also more exercise. I have even noticed that now when I buy my son baby food there are more organic choices to choose from, where as a few months ago their wasn't, even when I was pregnant I didn't see many organic kinds of baby food. People are also trying to teach their children better eating habits to keep them from being obese. I even try to watch what my son eats because I now know whats good and bad for his body as a growing child and really because he's a young baby.

The Restoration

The Parliament wanted to overthrow King James II because he was Roman Catholic, and the last Roman Catholic which was Queen Mary, who went on a killing spree of all Protestant followers. Everyone was afraid this would happen to them again since there was a Roman Catholic and the thrown and also because King James II was about the have a son who would be Catholic also, so that brought more pressure to the Parliament to do away the the king. Because of this continuance of the Catholics on the thrown was a worry to King James II because of how past royalty was usually overthrown. So instead of the King getting overthrown in the old way he decided to flee with his family.

This revolution was important because nobody had to be killed for new royalty to take over the thrown. This revolution to me also showed how some people were also evolved enough to come up with another way to get what they want without using violence to get it. Although they didnt know what the king was actually going to do to the people that weren't following his religion, which to me he should have been given a chance. The Glorious Revolution is the first one I've ever even heard of that didn't end in lives being lost.
